Our Logo: Explained
The University of Hawai‘i Department of Medicine logo weaves together elements that reflect our missions, values, and connection to our community. The Hawaiian voyaging canoe, shaped like a helping hand, symbolizes the dedication of Internal Medicine physicians guiding patients on their journey toward healing and wellness, while the stars represent the diverse specialties within the department. As a special tribute to the island of Maui, first island in the Hawaiian chain to be discovered and settled by the ancient Polynesian voyagers, the constellation of Maui shines amongst the stars as a guiding beacon. Our logo was inspired by Dr. Benjamin Young, a pioneer of the Hōkūleʻa voyage, beloved physician regarded as the first Native Hawaiian psychiatrist, and founder of the ‘Imi Ho‘ōla program.
