UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI’I AT MANOA
John A. Burns School of Medicine
Department of Medicine

Thank you for your interest in serving on our volunteer clinical faculty.  We greatly appreciate the special commitment, support, and often sacrifice that you are willing to provide to teach our future physicians.

Before embarking on the lengthy process to gain an official appointment from the University of Hawaii Board of Regents, please carefully consider if indeed you are willing and able to volunteer at least 60 hours per year.  Your teaching may be done in any of these recognized teaching venues, after approval by their respective faculty coordinators.  In order of lowest to highest demands on your time, they are:

LECTURES, WORKSHOPS, AND COLLOQUIA
(1-3 hours each, not counting preparation time)

  • Medical students (colloquia, lectures. Scheduled Monday-Friday, usually between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.)
  • Residents (including Overview of Internal Medicine, Wednesdays 5:30 p.m., University Tower 618. Lectures at Kuakini, Hawaii Medical Center East, and our affiliated clinics)
  • Faculty and practitioners (including Departmental Grand Rounds, Tuesdays 12:30, Queen’s Conference Center and lectures at our affiliated sites)

MENTORING
Explain and demonstrate what it takes to be a doctor in your specialty and line of service, at least 1 hour per month per student.  This may include having a medical student “shadow” you at work.  A faculty member will provide some training about advising and evaluating your student or resident.

CLINICAL SKILLS EXAMINER
Receive a 30-minute orientation in evaluating clinical skills (history taking, physical exam, counseling).  Observe a student interview and examine a patient.  Provide feedback and written evaluation.  1-2 hr per student.

LONGITUDINAL CLINICAL MENTOR (LCM)
Be assigned one MS1 and one MS2 to provide a 3-4 hr supervised clinical experience each month between August – May. Ideally, this commitment will be for a period of two years with a given student. Please reach out to receive the LCM Handbook for more information.

TUTOR FOR PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING (PBL)
Attend a 3-hr training session if you haven’t done this before.  Meet with 4-6 first and second year students, twice a week, 3 hrs/session, for 12 weeks.  Provide a judicious blend of autonomy and guidance.  Provide written evaluation within 1 week after the 12-wk unit ends.  (Sharing the tutoring with one other faculty member should be considered)

RESEARCH ADVISOR
Assist in hypothesis formulation, experimental design, model research ethics, provide subjects or subject database, supervise poster preparation, presentation, or manuscript.   Variable hours.

MEDICAL TEAM CARE ATTENDING
Admit your inpatients to the housestaff team.  Provide teaching and guidance, but encourage housestaff responsibility (allow housestaff to write orders, suggest care plans).  Another teaching attending may also provide more teaching about your patients.

LONGITUDINAL INTEGRATED CLERKSHIP (LIC) AMBULATORY PRECEPTOR DURING THIRD-YEAR CLERKSHIP
(This is required of all third year students)
Supervise a third-year medical student in your office or clinic for 1 half-day per week for the duration of a semester (21 weeks).  Observe, discuss, and evaluate their interview, physical examination, assessment, plan, oral presentation, and write-up of appropriate patients.  Assure that the student turns in at least 5 full write-ups to Department of Medicine.  Submit an evaluation of the student within 2 weeks after the block ends.

AMBULATORY MEDICINE FOURTH YEAR ELECTIVE IN INTERNAL MEDICINE
(Optional, usually taken by students who are interested in internal medicine and primary care)
Supervise a fourth year medical student full-time in your office or clinic for a 2 or 4-wk block. Provide evaluation of student within 2 weeks after the block ends.  Please define your elective and preferred blocks to teach.

ELECTIVE FOR STUDENTS
(Optional, for students)
Supervise a student for a 2 or 4-wk block in your office, clinic or hospital.  Provide written evaluation at conclusion of the block.

ELECTIVE FOR RESIDENTS
(Optional, for residents)
Supervise a resident for a 4-wk block in your office, clinic or hospital.  Provide written evaluation at conclusion of the block.

CONTINUITY CLINIC FOR RESIDENTS
Provide supervision and patient panel to at least 1 medical resident, 1/2 day per week throughout the resident’s internship and residency.  Enter affiliation agreement with Hawaii Residency Programs to maintain standards of the Accreditation Council of General Medical Education.  Become familiar with curricular and documentation requirements (PATH guidelines).  Provide written evaluation of resident on a regular basis.
